c17t3P2: There are at least two strata of markedly atypical cells in the dermis. The number of loosely, but regularly, spaced nests is greater than six. This limited pattern in this restricted field would be sufficient to qualify as variant vertical growth. The dimensions would be less than 1 mm. On the basis of these findings, the lesion would qualify as borderline; it could be additionally qualified as minimal deviation SSM simply on the basis of cytologic features and limited physical dimensions.

c17t3P3: The pattern in this field also qualifies this example of thin, metastasizing SSM as a MDM, and as borderline melanocytic neoplasia of indeterminate malignant potential. The pattern qualifies as thin, typical vertical growth; the degree of atypia is marked. The epidermis shows the pattern of the common final pathway. The band-like infiltrates are somewhat halo nevus-like.
