Melanoma (c17t3P2)

c17t3P1 (case 1, continued): Nests and fascicles of atypical cells are loosely spaced in a delicate, vascularized fibrous matrix. The cells are “epithelioid” and spindle shaped. Cytoplasms are lavender. The cells are variably pigmented. There is variation in nuclear size and outlines; chromatin is dense. The lesion has Spitz-like qualities but should it be classified as a Spitz-like variant? Are the patterns sufficiently deviant to warrant classifying the lesion as a non-Spitz variant or as a phenotypically ambiguous variant?

GENERAL INDEX

c17t3P2: The degree of cytologic atypia is moderately severe; clearly, the lesion deviates cytologically from the features of a “classic Spitz nevus.”
