Fig. c5t3P10: Stellate and rounded tumor cells have lavender cytoplasm. Small blue arrows point to cells that cytologically are common histiocytes. The tumor cells have cytoplasmic processes (a reticular quality); the myxoid matrix is relatively free of connective tissue fibers.

Fig. c5t3P11: In this field, small blue arrows point to cells that cytologically are histiocytes; they are clearly different from the tumor cells. Small lytic defects contain loosely arranged lymphoid cells and histiocytes. To the right, small vessels are regularly spaced. One small vessel near the top of the field on the right has a thickened wall which is concentrically laminated.

Fig. c5t3P12: In this field, the matrix is mostly fibrous; morphologic, stellate-shaped fibroblasts are loosely spaced in the matrix. The plump, rounded, lavender cells are distinctive for adventitial myxofibroblastoma. Some of the large cells have pale, mucinous cytoplasm. They are interpreted as mesenchymal myxoblasts (see Fig. C4t3P9).

Fig. c5t3P13: The cytoplasm of the plump cells is mostly lavender, but some of the cells show areas, mostly at the periphery of the cytoplasm, that are distinctly basophilic; the cytoplasmic basophilia is a mucinous quality. Some of the nuclei are optically clear; they show marginated chromatin.

Fig. c5t3P14: In this fibrous portion, distinctive, plump, lavender cells form clusters. A red arrow on the left points to a nucleus with an acidophilic inclusion of cytoplasm.

Fig. c5t3P15: In comparison with the matrix of Fig. c5t3P14, the matrix of this lesion is more fibrous (fibers are coarser and sharply defined).  The fibers are units rather than bundles; the matrix is reticulated. The fibroblasts are stellate in outline. In the fibrous areas, nuclear chromatin tends to be dense (see Fig. c4t3P9 & Fig. c5t3P12).

Fig. c5t3P16: The lesion is fibrous to the left, and myxoid to the right. Vessels to the right are clustered; they have thickened, fibrous walls. These vessels are a distinctive feature of the lesion, but may not be a prominent feature of all examples.
